Birke Ulrich, from Germany, went to the 2003
Rowing World Cup in Munich with new eyes.
Until then she had accompanied her brother to
international competitions and seen the event
from an athlete's point of view. But two years
ago she came back as a rowing photographer.
"I grew up with this sport and have always
enjoyed the atmosphere at rowing events," she
explains.

En 2003, l’Allemande Birke Ulrich s’est rendue
à Munich à la Coupe du monde d’aviron avec
un oeil neuf. Jusqu’alors, elle avait accompagné
son frère à des compétitions internationales et
regardé les épreuves du point de vue de l’athlète.
Mais elle est revenue il y a deux ans en tant que
photographe d’aviron. «J’ai grandi avec ce
sport et j’ai toujours apprécié l’ambiance des
compétitions ». Explique-t-elle.
As a freelance photo designer, Birke covers a variety of international
sports events, from beach volleyball to speed skating. She also enjoys
abstract photography and travel documentaries. Just have a look at her

"I am fascinated by the variety of motifs that you can find in rowing,"
she says. "The challenge at rowing events is to find the right spots to
get a good perspective and take exciting pictures."
Early in the morning, when the light is smooth, Birke captures athletes
preparing their boats. At the start, she focuses on the concentrated faces.
And she loves to experiment with details like oars, boats, signs and buoys.
Story-telling photos are what she's after.
En tant que conceptrice photo indépendante, Birke couvre un grand nombre
de manifestations sportives internationales diverses, qui vont du volley-ball
de plage au patinage de vitesse. Elle aime aussi la photo abstraite et les

« Je suis fascinée par la variété des sujets que l’on trouve avec l’aviron »,
dit-elle. «La difficulté à ces compétitions c’est de se placer aux bons endroits
pour obtenir la perspective qui permettra de faire des photos excitantes. »
Tôt le matin dans la lumière encore douce, Birke saisit les rameurs en train
de préparer leurs bateaux. Au départ, elle s’arrête sur leurs visages concentrés.
Et elle aime faire des expériences avec les détails comme les rames, les
bateaux, la signalétique, les bouées. Ce qu’elle recherche c’est des photos
qui racontent des histoires.

For Sybrand Treffers, a rowing event can be
anything from a lot of fun to slightly boring.
That depends on whether he's at a conventional
or out-of-the-ordinary event.
Pour Sybrand Treffers, une compétition d’aviron
peut tout générer, du plus grand plaisir à l’ennui
léger. Tout dépend s’il s’agit d’épreuves conven-tionnelles ou hors de l’ordinaire.
What he thinks is exciting is going up into cranes
in a German harbour or chasing a 220 km race
that goes on non-stop around-the-clock (the
Eleven City Race in northern Holland).

At world-class rowing events, Sybrand usually
brings along newspapers and magazines in his
photo bag, especially if he works at the start all
day. Or he competes against fellow photographers to try and see who can make the coolest photo at slow shutter
speeds. By the way, he also thinks silver medallists make "a much more
interesting photo".
Ce qui est excitant, de son point de vue, c’est
de monter dans les grues d’un port allemand ou
de courser une épreuve de 200 Km, 24h sur 24
sans interruption (la Course des onze villes
dans le nord de la Hollande).
The rowing community has mostly come to know Sybrand Treffers
through the web site www.nlroei.nl and the monthly Rowing News.
Rowing photography started for him in 1999, at the World Rowing
Championships in Canada. A writer at the time, he replaced a Dutch
rowing magazine photographer who "failed to receive his girlfriend's
authorization to go to Canada". He hasn't put his camera down since.
À une compétition d’aviron de classe mondiale,
Sybrand emporte généralement avec lui des
journaux et des magazines dans son sac photo, surtout s’il travaille au
départ toute la journée. Sinon, il affronte ses concurrents photographes et
c’est à celui qui fera la photo la plus cool avec la plus faible vitesse
d'obturation. Et à propos, il est convaincu également que les médaillés
d’argent font « un sujet de photo bien plus intéressant. »
What he says makes rowing photography unique: "The rare combination
of power, elegance and beautiful rhythm." What he cannot stand:
"Somehow, all rowing lakes seem to be oriented in such a way that the
sun always stands in the wrong place."
La communauté d’aviron a découvert Sybrand Treffers surtout grâce à son
site Internet www.nlroei.nl et par le mensuel Rowing News. Il a débuté
dans la photographie d’aviron en 1999 aux Championnats du monde
d’aviron au Canada. Venu de la presse écrite à l’origine, il remplaçait le
photographe d’un magazine d’aviron néerlandais qui «n’avait pu recevoir
l’autorisation de sa petite amie de se rendre au Canada ». Depuis, son
appareil ne l’a pas quitté.
Pour lui, ce qui rend unique une photographie d’aviron, c’est « la rare com-binaison de force, d’élégance et de rythme superbe ». Ce qu’il ne supporte
pas: «Pour une raison quelconque tous les bassins d’aviron semblent ori-entés de telle façon que le soleil paraît toujours situé au mauvais endroit. »
