and left the rest of the field in their wake,
relegating Munich winners Christian
Schreiber and Rene Burmeister to second.
An intense German - Italian rivalry grew
throughout the season in the men's eight.
Germany started with the edge by winning at Eton. But Italy came to Munich
with renewed vigour, finishing first over
Germany. Tied at one-all, the two crews
raced their closest race in the Lucerne
final. The Germans took the title with
Italy crossing the line just half a second
behind.
The season also saw countries using the
Rowing World Cup races to help select
national team boats. Italy lined up their
two top lightweight men's doubles at
Munich with former World Champion
and Olympic partners, Leonardo
Pettinari and Elia Luini racing against
each other. Pettinari with new partner,
2003 single Champion Stefano Basalini,
came out ahead by winning gold, earning
them Italian selection. But the duo then
floundered on the edge of the medals at
Lucerne, 10 seconds off the pace.

Leading the overall World Cup points
after Eton, Great Britain then surrendered
their lead to Germany following Munich.
Germany has won the overall World Cup
standing every year but this year their
usual large winning margin was significantly reduced as Great Britain and Italy
closed the gap.
