Germany has become synonymous with junior rowing; so much so that the European Coupe de la Jeunesse competition for junior
rowers does not allow Germany to participate. This year in Amsterdam, at the World Rowing Junior Championships, Germany did like
they always do and dominated the finals and the medals podium.
In a week of racing that delivered
a weather range from dry to
damp, the finals day statistics tell
the story: 13 events… 11 medals
for Germany… 5 of them gold.
Hans Gruhne of Germany got his
fair share of solo rowing. A rigger
problem during his heat of the
men’s single meant he could not
finish the race. Instead Gruhne
had to re-run the 2000 metre
course solo for advancement to
the next round. Gruhne then led
his repechage from start to finish,
won his semifinal in an easy
fashion and despite no reason to
sprint in the final, still finished in
under seven minutes.
Collecting three golds in just as
many years Mandy Reppner has
been in the winning women’s quad
for Germany every year. This
gives sixth-year rower Reppner an
unbroken winning streak for her
international career – from heat
through to final.
Mixed in amongst the German
fanfare 14 other countries also
scored a spot on the medals
podium including a history-making medal by Lindsay Meyer
of the United States. Coming
from a country that tends to focus
on sweep events, Meyer becomes
the first American to medal in the
junior women’s single.
Unable to hold onto his gold medal
streak Ionel Strungaru of Romania
had to settle for bronze in the highly
competitive men’s pair. Strongaru,
at his third junior championships,
already has three golds and a
bronze, but the will of Australia’s
Adam Wertheimer and Jonothan
Hookway and the speed of Serbia
& Montenegro (Ivan Ostojic and
Aleksandar Radovic) left Strungaru
and partner Marius Luchian at the
back end of the medals. Ostojic
and Radovic’s silver medal makes
history by being one of the last
medals to be won under the name
and colours of the country Serbia
& Montenegro.
Making up the final spot on the
regatta programme, the starting
blocks of the Bosbaan rowing
course filled with 54 tense
athletes readying for the start of
the men’s eight. Germany took a
flyer out of the blocks with New
Zealand sticking to the German
pace. A better second half by New
Zealand pushed Germany out of
winning. Germany added silver
instead to their collection.
Next year the Junior World
Rowing Championships doubles
as the test event for the Beijing
Olympics. Many of these juniors
will meet again at this new Asian

Gruhne remporte l’or en skiff junior
Championnats du monde d’aviron junior
L’Allemagne est devenue synonyme de l’aviron junior; à tel point que la Coupe de la Jeunesse européenne, destinée aux rameurs
juniors, ne l’autorise pas à y participer. Cette année, à Amsterdam, lors des Championnats du monde d’aviron junior, le pays est resté
fidèle à ses habitudes, dominant le podium des finales et des médailles.
Après une semaine de compétitions durant laquelle les conditions
météo oscillaient entre temps sec
et humide, les statistiques de la
finale parlent d’elles-mêmes: 13
épreuves… 11 médailles récoltées
par l’Allemagne… dont 5 d’or.
L’Allemand Hans Gruhne a ramé
seul pendant une bonne partie de la
régate. Un problème de portant
pendant l’épreuve éliminatoire du
skiff masculin l’a empêché de
terminer la course, ce qui l’a contraint
à re-parcourir les 2000 m tout seul
pour accéder à la manche suivante. Il
a alors mené le repêchage de front
pendant tout le parcours, a remporté
la demi-finale haut la main et a
même terminé la finale en moins de
sept minutes, alors qu’il n’avait
aucune raison de sprinter.
Récoltant trois médailles d’or en
autant d’années, Mandy Reppner
a tous les ans fait partie du quatre
de couple gagnant pour
l’Allemagne. En six ans de
pratique d’aviron, Mandy
Reppner a connu une carrière
internationale au succès ininter-rompu – des épreuves éliminatoires à la finale.
Disséminés dans le feu d’artifice
allemand, 14 autres pays ont
également accédé au podium.
Lindsay Meyer notamment a
décroché une médaille historique
pour les Etats-Unis: originaire
d’une nation plutôt centrée sur
les compétitions d’aviron de
pointe, elle est devenue la
première Américaine médaillée
en skiff féminin junior.
Le Roumain Ionel Strungaru
n’a quant à lui pas réussi à
conserver la médaille d’or et
a dû se contenter du bronze
dans l’épreuve très compétitive
du deux de pointe. En trois
championnats juniors, il comptait
déjà trois médailles d’or et une
de bronze mais la volonté des
Australiens Adam Wertheimer
et Jonothan Hookway, ainsi
que la vitesse d’Ivan Ostojic et
Aleksandar Radovic (
Serbie-Monténégro), ont relégué
Strungaru et son partenaire
Marius Luchian à la troisième
marche du podium. La médaille
d’argent d’Ostojic et de Radovic
restera dans les annales comme
l’une des dernières remportées
sous le nom et les couleurs de la
Serbie-Monténégro.
En point final du programme
de régate, les blocs de départ de
la course d’aviron du Bosbaan
accueillaient 54 athlètes tendus,
prêts à prendre le départ du
huit de pointe masculin.
L’Allemagne a jailli des blocs
avec la Nouvelle-Zélande
dans son ombre. La Nouvelle-Zélande a réalisé une meilleure
seconde moitié, soufflant la
victoire à l’Allemagne qui a
ajouté l’argent à sa collection.
L’année prochaine, les Championnats du monde d’aviron
junior serviront aussi de test
pour les Jeux Olympiques de
Pékin. Beaucoup de ces juniors
se rencontreront sur le nouveau
site asiatique.
