Rowers aren’t the only ones challenged
by the cold conditions. 2007 World
Championships bronze medallist coxswain
AcerNethercott of Great Britain admits
winter can be tough for coxswains who
are prone to staying lean and making
little movement. Plenty of layers with the
outermost being fully water and wind proof
is a necessity to protect him from the rain,
wind and sometimes snow.
The winter is also a time for more land
training with weights and ergs where
Nethercott leads the weight session warm-up. “Observing the way in which the guys
encourage, chastise, criticise and praise
each other whilst they’re lifting weights is
invaluable to me as it helps me understand
their personalities and motivations. It is only
through doing that that I can properly do
my job when the crunch-time races come
around in the summer.
